7 Favourite Quotes to Live By

Here’s a short collection of my favourites, in no particular order:  iStock_000002193842XSmall

  1. “If you and I agree on absolutely everything, only one of us is necessary” – Dan Millman.
    - I try to remember this when my relationship gets a bit turbulent.  Not always easy, but it helps
  2. “My will shall shape the future. Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man’s doing but my own. I am the force; I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze. My choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny.” – Elaine Maxwell.
  3. “It is a mistake to suppose that men succeed through success; they much oftener succeed through failures. Precept, study, advice, and example could never have taught them so well as failure has done.” – Samuel Smiles.
    - Or, as Robert Kiyosaki puts it – to succeed, fail faster.
  4. “As if you could kill time without injuring eternity!” Henry Thoreau.
    - (That phrase, “killing time”, is one of my personal pet peeves.)
  5. “Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us.” Dalai Lama.
    - Hear, hear!  The more responsibility we each take for creating the world we want in our own lives, the better the world without will shape itself to match.
  6. “The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.” Frank Lloyd Wright.
    - That’s why you should be careful about saying “always” and “never”!!!
  7. “To free us from the expectations of others, to give us back to ourselves — there lies the great, singular power of self-respect.” – Joan Didion.
    - and there lies one of my ultimate goals, too.

Sad but true.

Love this one:
“As if you could kill time without injuring eternity!” Henry Thoreau.

I’m a fan of Thoreau’s and I don’t think I’d heard that one.

The idea of killing time makes me cringe too. Recently I did a post called 88 Truths I’ve learned about life, and the last and (to me most important one) was “Killing time is an atrocity. It’s priceless and it never grows back.”

Ok, so I’m not Thoreau :)
