30 Days Raw – Day 11 Cravings Hit

by Crystal on March 12, 2009

This entry is part 12 of 19 in the series Raw Food Trial

Today was the day the cravings hit.  I would have done just about anything for an egg and cheese muffin, with the cheese slightly melted and the yolk just short of hard.  Mmm.

I think that having spent yesterday not eating much didn’t help.  What with losing my glasses, I was too caught up in trying to find them, then get to work, then get back from work, then replace them.  My first meal was at about 4pm.  This morning again I was checking the train station (which had noticeably less weeds, so they must have had a good look for me) and just picked at my breakfast fruit.  Having well and truly worn off that perpetually full feeling I had for the previous 10 days, I suspect, might have had a lot to do with why I wanted that muffin so badly.

In any case, I managed to resist and didn’t get one.  There was plenty of opportunity, but as Steve Pavlina says – when you know it’s only 30 days, you can push through that kind of thing.  I pulled out more fruit, took an early lunch, and then tonight made myself a nice ‘recipe’ dinner.IMG_1184

That’s another thing.  Today I discovered that there are some ‘gadgets’ for raw food preparation that most of us already have.  I was all set to fork out $50 + postage for a ’spiralizer’ so I could make raw ‘pasta’, when I realised I hadn’t even checked the other blades on my food processor.  Put the grater blade in, low speed setting, and I had a shorter version of a pasta in no time.  Zucchini and Carrot.  Then I made a macadamia/basil sauce to go with it, topped with some chopped tomato (threw more basil in there – it was threatening to take over my kitchen window, so I reckon it deserved it!) and some diced avocado.  VERY nice.  In fact, I made a bit more sauce and am taking it in with me today for lunch!  My photo would probably give one of those food stylists nightmares, (can you tell I used the fork to scoop out the avocado?) but I liked it…

So, long and short, I’m determined to stuff myself with fibre again, and hopefully that’ll take me far enough into this 30 days that I won’t have to deal with the worst cravings.  I’m definitely going to be incorporating a lot of my new eating habits into my permanent diet afterwards.  I can’t imagine going back to all cooked/junk food and even while I was wanting to have that muffin I knew it wasn’t going to feel really good and I definitely wouldn’t be stuffing it down and coming back for more.

I said when I started this 30 days that it was going to be like a dietary ‘reset button’ – I know when I eat junk I want more of it, but equally when I’m eating healthy I start enjoying and wanting more of that too.  By the end of the month, hopefully, I’ll be set in the habit.  Fingers crossed!
